"Our Rice House"

I am not exactly a drama serial couch potato but I do get addicted to one or two serials once in a blue moon. Recently there was this once-a-week serial broadcast on Channel 8 called Our Rice House - "Wo men de fan dian" led by actor Thomas Ong(as character Da Fan). It's not the usual dramatic plot but rather it focuses on the troubles, sadness, happiness and realities of the common man on the street which results in it being unusually touching without even trying. More often than not, I find myself totally immersed in the theme song sang by singer Cai Chun Jian.

If you have watched the last episode where "Da Fan" met his long lost girlfriend after countless years, he cooked her her favourite egg fried rice. It was such a simple dish but so filled with emotions and love. Being a fan of cooking shows, I of course listened intently when 'Da Fan' taught his staff the secret of cooking a mean fried rice. Miss No-Sense-Of-Direction, pls listen up!!!! :-

"First, you must used rice that is kept overnight. While being kept in the fridge, do not cover the rice. Use butter instead of oil so that the rice will be more fragrant. When the butter is heated, pour in the eggs. While the egg is half cooked, pour in the rice and make sure to coat all the rice with egg till it is a golden colour. Sounds simple enough but still I think it's best to leave it to the experts. As the food connoiseurs often point out : the simpler the dish, the harder it is to make it taste real good. "

Well, the series ended with the love-lorn "Da Fan" character being all alone at a rice field in Bali where he and his ex-gf once swore their undying love before she lost her memory. It is rather melancholic and touching but nevertheless all romantics would agree it's already the best ending that can be because we are a sucker for sacrificial love stories...sob sob.

I wonder when I will ever get to taste that sort of egg fried rice. Coincidently last week, my family and I went to this restaurant called "Chui Xiang Kitchen" along Teck Chye Terrace(near Serangoon MRT). We ordered fried rice and I don't know why but it uncanningly gave me a feeling like the one Thomas Ong cooked in the drama series. It was yellow-coated with egg, not too oily, hence giving a rather light feeling and the prawns in the rice were of a good size(at least can be seen), unlike the puny ones you see at other places. I really liked it!

Immediately, I commented to my sister the fried rice tastes like the one at "Wo Men De Fan Dian". She laughed and said "as if I have been there!" To make it more "coincidental", the restaurant also serves "Lobster Porridge" as their signature dish like in "Wo Men De Fan Dian". I remember that in one of the episodes, a 1 million dollar prize was to be given to anyone who could produce the best porridge and the chef in the drama show made this signature dish.

We also ordered salad prawn and uniquely this restaurant serves it sprinkled with pork floss, further enriching the texture and taste of the prawn when you pop it into your mouth. The result is a certain delightful crunch. Yum! The beef with spring onion was really soft and the prawn paste fried chicken wing was really yummy.

Every dish seemed painstakingly made with love....just like in "Wo Men De Fan Dian". I am not sure if it was because the restaurant wasn't full on a week day so they had more time to devote to our dishes. But who cares....because it sure was delicious.

Other than the food being yummy, the service was pretty good for a small eatery like this. The price is on the average side. I am surprised the restaurant isn't as filled up as the others along the street. Perhaps you might have different tastebuds and diagree with me on the quality of the food. But it's no harm giving it a try. Since "Wo Men De Fan Dian" is fictitious, 'Chui Xiang Kitchen' is the next best alternative. Bon appetite!

Mummy Dearest...

Oh, I was looking through my old photos when I found this. Hmm...quite apt for Mother's Day. Carnations are one of the most lasting flowers you can find. Perhaps their strength and resilience despite their gentle beauty make them the most appropriate flower to symbolise our mothers who are women of strength.

Who Is Your Muse?

Hi! I chanced upon this quiz. Well, not the usual quiz you might like to take. But if you are terribly bored on this rainy afternoon...... What is your Muse

My Inner Muse is Urania.
You are most like this muse of astronomy.
Your head is in the stars, and you look to the future.
You give off a heavenly, mysterious vibe.
And you're not too bad at predicting the
future.

Oh, that's nice. :) So, what's yours? Write in to tell me under "comments" of this post.
